Genetic Identification of Bats in Bridges
The Species from Feces team attended the 19th International Bat Research Conference and the 50th North American Society for Bat Research Conference, which co-convened in Austin, Texas, in August. We presented our work and that of our collaborators that shows that bridges across the U.S. and Canada are useful for detecting federally listed bat species. Guano was scraped off the sides of bridges using telescoping poles with collection cups or taken from piles, and then sent to us for genetic analysis to determine which species were present. Bridges are an underutilized means to assess bat species presence across a landscape.
